Being a Big Brother is easy! It's about doing things that you would normally do with your friends. Richard Cotnam has been a Big for almost two years. Read on to see how his experience as a Big Brother is just as rewarding for him as it is for his Little.

"My becoming a Big Brother was a result of my brother and my girlfriend's good example.  My brother became the Lanark BBBSO President after many years as a Big Brother and my girlfriend is now a Big For A Day having graduated from her Big Sister match of 6 years.  I was able to see first hand the positive effect and the wonderful friendship that developed with both their matches.

I was matched with Scott a year and a half ago when he was 9 years old.  It is very difficult to say who benefits the most, although I think that I definitely end up way ahead. It's a little like having a fan club and having a new best friend for sure.

In the last year and a half, I have seen Scott get more organized and develop a terrific sense of humor.  He has gone from a halting type of ice skater to one who next season may be hard for me to catch.  We both look forward to roller blading in the summer.

Scott has helped me realize what's important and just as important, what is not.  Scott knows he has someone he can call and who is rooting for him.  I look forward to helping him get to where ever he hopes to.  The one on one time means Scott has a good listener, and he has become one as well.

My time with Scott is the best part of my week.  I hope and expect that Scott and I will graduate from our match when he is 18 and remain life long friends.

Being a Big Brother is a little like quitting smoking.  It's something you think about for sometime before doing it, something you put off until the time is right and then wonder why you didn't do it sooner because it's one of the most rewarding things you've ever done.

I get great satisfaction from my friendship and mentoring of a child who wants or needs some special caring.  I hope you give serious consideration to changing a child's life for the better."

There is no time like the present. If you are considering being a Big, visit our website for more program information or download the application form right now.
