There were three Tri-Buddies competing at the Dunrobin Kids of Steele Event at the Bonnenfant YMCA-YWCA Outdoor Education and Leadership Centre Sunday August 29th
.
The first and coldest part of the Triathlon is the swim portion. As spectators shivered the participants braved the cold and windy morning and jumped into the Ottawa River to complete their swim. Not even white caps and wind could stop these kids. Upon completing their swim they quickly slipped on shoes, crocs and one even wore flip flops before running up a grueling hill to get to their transition zone. The second leg of the race is the cycling portion. This leg of the race saw the participants racing down sixth line road in Dunrobin. The road was thankfully closed by local police officers; allowing the participants to have a staff cycling route. As spectators cheered the participants arrived back from their second leg and jumped off their bikes to return them to their racks. The third leg is the running portion. The participants completed several laps of a predetermined and well laid out route. There were spectators cheering participants at every stage of the foot race. As the participants counted their laps the cheers got louder, and one by one they were finishing the race by running through the large pillars and sign that indicated "FINISH LINE". The face and cheers at the end stage let the kids know that they were heroes!!
The Tri-buddies were all smiles upon finishing. For each this was their first triathlon so for starting and finishing they were already successful. In addition to finishing their race they all had impressive standings:
McKenzie came first in the 8-9 age category for females with mountain bikes. Congratulations McKenzie!!
Jibril came in 7th in the 8-9 age category for males with mountain bikes. Congratulations Jibril!!
Dominik came in 3rd in the 12-13 age category for males with mountain bikes. Congratulations Dominik!!
