Search And Rescue Global 1 Visit Our Big BunchPosted by Julie Crabtree in Thank you, Guest bloggers, Bigs, BBBSO |

Like last meeting we had some guests in, but this time it wasn't to play sports. The Littles ran around and played games while our guests were Sandy, Traci and his dog Havoc from Search and Rescue Global 1 (SG1), the volunteer search and rescue team for the Ottawa/Gatineau area, got set up. The team from SG1 gave us a presentation called "Hug-a-Tree and Survive", which teaches children basic survive principals if they ever get lost in the woods. The Littles were very eager to respond to the questions anytime Sandy called on them and sometimes too eager. Just as it became apparent that the Littles were getting a wee bit antsy from all the sitting we moved onto the next portion of the presentation where Traci called out to his dog, Havoc, who had been patiently waiting in another part of the gym. Traci explained to us how the dogs track scents and then had Havoc demonstrate by getting him to track down a Little who we strategically hid in a pile of basketballs and volleyballs. Next, Traci showed us a few more commands that Havoc could do, including demonstrating a "takedown", or how Havoc gets lost or disoriented people to stop walking away on one of our Bigs. The night ended with a chance for the group to pet and play with Havoc for a little bit.
A BIG thanks goes out to Sandy, Traci and Havoc for teaching us about what their team does, survival skills and entertaining us with some pretty nifty tricks. Once again it was a great experience to have members from the wider community join the group for an evening and we hope to continue others in our group.
